What are acrylic nails made of?

Acrylic nails are made by combining a liquid acrylic product with a powdered acrylic product. The two products (known as a monomer and a polymer, respectively) together form a soft ball that can be fashioned into a nail shape.

Once a nail technician applies this acrylic to a client’s nails, the material hardens and becomes much stronger, and then it can be buffed and filed to the customer’s liking.

Who invented acrylic nails?

You might be surprised to learn that acrylics as we know them today were first developed in 1934 by a dentist named Maxwell Lappe. He created these artificial nails in order to help nail-biters curb their habit. Who would’ve guessed that they’d become such a huge fashion statement in the decades following?

We also offer Gel Nails too at our nail salon in Rotherham. During a gel manicure we apply a coat of coloured gel that looks very similar to a normal nail polish, the difference being you then place your hands until a UV light to ‘cure’ the gel, and then they’re dry.

Unlike normal nail polish, your gel polish won’t smudge and the drying time is very quick – no more dashing back to our salon because you smudged a nail on your way out the door!

The gel polish we use is kind to nails but will create a hard finish to ensure your new gel nails are long lasting and durable. We have a wide range of colours to choose from, so you’ll be spoiled for choice!

A Paraffin Wax treatment can be added onto our Luxury Manicure or Pedicure treatments, and will leave your skin feeling baby-soft.

We apply a soft wax to the hands or feet, and allow this to soak for 15 – 30 minutes. It’s a great way to repair dry, cracked heels or hands, and make them silky smooth again.

Once the wax has begun to harden, it will open up your pores to eliminate dirt or toxins, along with dead skin cells which keeps your skin feeling dry and dull.
