What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable pen clinically proven to help adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 kg/m² or greater achieve significant weight loss.
Mounjaro is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist.
This type of medication works by mimicking the effects of a natural hormone called GLP-1.
GLP-1 helps to regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. Mounjaro works by increasing insulin production, reducing appetite, and slowing down digestion.
Mounjaro also works on the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors. GIP regulates energy balance in the brain and fat cells.
Mimicking the effects of both GLP-1 and GIP, Mounjaro has more weight loss potential than medicines that work on GLP-1 alone. A 2021 meta-analysis showed that over one year of clinical use, tirzepatide was observed to be superior to semaglutide for obesity reduction.
Can Mounjaro Help Me Lose Weight?
Suppresses Appetite
Mounjaro suppresses your appetite by making you feel fuller for longer, helping you to break the food cravings naturally.
Slows Digestion
Mounjaro slows down the emptying of your stomach, helping you feel satisfied for longer after eating and reducing the urge to snack.
Increases Insulin

Guidance on Contraception and Pregnancy
For women taking Mounjaro, it’s important to be aware of new guidance from the MHRA regarding contraception and pregnancy:
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Mounjaro should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking Mounjaro, you should stop the medication immediately and consult your doctor.
Contraception: If you are of childbearing potential, it is recommended to use an effective barrier method of contraception (like condoms) in addition to any oral contraceptive pill. This is because tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro) can affect how well oral contraceptives work, particularly due to its effect on slowing gastric emptying.
Contraception Wash-Out Period: As a precautionary measure, you should continue to use contraception for a 1-month “wash-out” period after stopping your use of Mounjaro.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the dosage schedule?
For the best chance of weight loss success, we’ll start you on 2.5mg weekly injections for the first month to allow your body to get used to the medication.
If suitable for you, we’ll gradually increase this every four weeks as advised by the doctor until you reach your maximum maintenance dose of 5mg, 10mg or 15mg.
- Where is the best place to inject Mounjaro?
The best areas of the body are the belly (at least 5cm away from the belly button), the front of the thighs and the backs of the upper arms. Avoid repeat injections in the same place by regularly changing where you inject Mounjaro.
While the medication is absorbed similarly regardless of site, clinical research shows significant differences in side effects depending on where you inject. Thigh injections generally produce the fewest side effects. Abdominal injections show the strongest appetite suppression effect. However, we don’t yet know if these differences in appetite suppression translate to different weight loss results in the long term, as no studies have directly measured this. For more detailed information about injection sites and best practices, read our article on Mounjaro injection sites.
- I’ve been using Wegovy. Can I switch to Mounjaro?
Yes, you can make the change on your next weekly schedule, but you will still need to start with the 2.5mg pens. If you have been experiencing side effects with Wegovy, you will need to let these pass before starting with Mounjaro.
- How can I manage constipation as a side effect of Mounjaro?
Constipation is a possible side effect of Mounjaro. To manage it, stay hydrated, vary your fibre intake, and maintain regular physical activity. If constipation persists, consult your doctor for additional strategies. Read more about managing Mounjaro-related constipation.
- What’s the best time to take my Mounjaro injection?
The timing of your Mounjaro injection can be fairly flexible. Generally, it’s recommended to take it at a consistent time so as not to forget altogether. However, individual factors may influence the best timing for you. Learn more about Mounjaro injection timing.
- Is fatigue a common side effect of Mounjaro, and how can I manage it?
Tiredness or fatigue can occur when using Mounjaro, especially in the early stages of treatment. To combat this, ensure you’re getting adequate sleep, maintain a nutritionally dense diet, and engage in regular, moderate exercise. If fatigue persists or worsens, consult your doctor. Discover more tips for managing Mounjaro-related tiredness.
- Can Mounjaro cause hair loss, and is it permanent?
Hair loss affects approximately 15% of people using Mounjaro or other GLP-1 medications for weight loss. This typically occurs as a temporary shedding triggered by rapid weight loss, nutritional changes, and metabolic stress rather than direct medication effects.
The good news is that this type of hair loss is usually reversible with proper nutritional support and, if needed, treatments like PRP therapy that can accelerate recovery. Most people see improvement within 3-6 months once nutritional balance is restored. For a comprehensive guide on why this happens, prevention strategies, and treatment options including our PRP and iPRF therapies, read our article on GLP-1 medications and hair loss.
- Can Mounjaro cause loose or sagging skin, and what can I do about it?
Rapid weight loss, which can occur with Mounjaro, can sometimes lead to loose or sagging skin, often referred to as “Ozempic face” when it affects the face. This isn’t a direct side effect of the medication but a result of significant fat loss.
While preventative measures can help, advanced aesthetic treatments like Radiofrequency Microneedling and PLLA fillers can effectively address skin laxity. For a comprehensive guide on the science behind this and available solutions, read our article on skin laxity after weight loss.
- How can I maintain my weight loss after stopping Mounjaro?
Maintaining weight loss after discontinuing Mounjaro is possible with the right approach. The TOWARD approach has shown promising results for sustained weight management. It combines a therapeutic carbohydrate reduction diet with regular exercise and remote monitoring tools, together with behavioural support. For a comprehensive guide on maintaining your weight loss after Mounjaro, read our article on Life After Mounjaro.
- Which is more effective, Wegovy or Mounjaro?
In clinical trials, Mounjaro was more effective than Wegovy for weight loss because its dual affect on GLP-1 and GIP hormones.
