Integumentary system
The integumentary system is the largest organ system in the human body, forming the physical and biochemical boundary between the body’s internal environment and the external world. [1] Its core structure is the skin, which is itself organised into two distinct layers – the epidermis and the dermis – underlaid by the subcutaneous hypodermis. Its appendages include hair follicles, nails, eccrine and apocrine sweat glands, and sebaceous glands.
Its functions extend well beyond physical protection: the integumentary system regulates body temperature, synthesises vitamin D, maintains fluid balance, and hosts a dense network of sensory receptors. For the purposes of aesthetic and regenerative medicine, it is the system within which the structural proteins ( collagen, elastin), barrier components ( ceramides, filaggrin, corneocytes), and cellular populations ( keratinocytes, fibroblasts) that treatments target are all organised.
The integumentary system is comprised of:
