The integumentary system is the largest organ system in the human body, forming the physical and biochemical boundary between the body’s internal environment and the external world. [1] Its core structure is the , which is itself organised into two distinct layers – the and the – underlaid by the subcutaneous . Its appendages include , nails, eccrine and apocrine sweat glands, and .

Its functions extend well beyond physical protection: the integumentary system regulates body temperature, synthesises , maintains fluid balance, and hosts a dense network of sensory receptors.
